Often honor is a quality that is perceived by a viewer and is very rarely decided upon by the actual person, although this can be shaped by their actions. Stealing may be considered a very dishonorable and horrible thing, yet in Mark Twain’s “Huckleberry Finn” stealing is not considered as dishonorable and the idea of honor is skewed. Huck feels that his father is not a good role model or an honorable man, yet later in the novel he steals because "Pap always said it warn't no harm to borrow things, if you was meaning to pay them back, sometime" (Twain 72). So why would Huck act based off of somebody who he think is a dishonorable person yet still thinks he, himself is honorable. Upon finding Jim on the island Huck is overjoyed at first, but later he begins to question himself and even thinks it is wrong to take Jim away from Ms. Watson when his conscience tells him "What had Miss Watson done to you, that you could see her nigger go off right under your eyes and never say one word?" so honor is yet again in question (Twain 88). So what is Mark Twain trying to say about honor by putting Huck’s in question? He is trying to show us how honor is something that you earn, and is a perceived idea more than something that is the same for everyone, meaning that although it would be a dishonorable and horrible thing to lie and steal to most people, Huck views them as a thing that is necessary as long as you do it in good faith and intentions.
After carefully reviewing your paragraph we feel that it is a good overall paragraph; however, there are some revisions that need to be made. There were many punctuation errors in the paragraph itself and in the quotes most of all. Secondly, throughout the paragraph you should use the author’s first and last name only once, further on in the paragraph, use his last name only: Twain when referring to the author. In your “question” at the beginning of the paragraph: So why would Huck act based off of somebody who he things is a dishonorable person” How come you don’t actually put a question mark at the end? Isn’t it a question? And you didn’t answer it. We feel that there were many run on sentences such as: “Upon finding Jim on the island Huck is overjoyed at first, but later he begins to question himself and even thinks it is wrong to take Jim away from Ms. Watson when his conscience tells him "What had Miss Watson done to you, that you could see her nigger go off right under your eyes and never say one word?" so honor is yet again in question (Twain 88).” We were wondering, how can one earn honor? We enjoyed your concluding sentence. - Kailyn, Elizabeth, and Savannah
We used Mark Twain's full name to avoid confusion that might occur later in the paragraph. We also realize that there were a few run-on sentences, but if we tried to separate them then it wouldn't have read quick as smoothly and the quotes wouldn't have made much sense. I noticed that we didn't put a question mark (A simple grammatical mistake) but the answer comes later on at the end of the paragraph "it would be a dishonorable and horrible thing to lie and steal to most people, Huck views them as a thing that is necessary as long as you do it in good faith and intentions." We also thought that you can't "earn" honor in way, but it is how others view you as a person, although your actions do effect how others see you and how honorable you are.
