Hiding spot = Garden of Eden Lord of the Flies = Satan/sin- the snake
1. Simon uses his spot in the woods as a place to escape from the others: "Simon paused. He looked over his shoulder... at the close ways behind him and glanced swiftly round to confirm that he was utterly alone" (47). This establishes the spot as a sort of haven, away from the chaos of the island as a whole. Major change: the place is introduced as an important part of Simon's existence on the island.
2. Simon sneaks out at night to go to his secret hiding place. The littuns think he is the beast and become very scared: (We can't find this quote in the book... help!) Minor change: Simon shows that he feels safe enough at his place to sneak off to it even in the dead of night.
3. The Lord of the Flies is put into the cave, this soils the sanctity of the hiding place. "there was the head grinning amusedly in the strange daylight."(126) Major change: the hiding place is ruined for Simon, like the Garden of Eden sin infects the place. This also shows that the place is no longer a secret and the other boys know about it.
4. The conversation Simon had with the Lord of the Flies foreshadows Simon's impending death. The Lord of the Flies symbolizes the devil, and when he said, "We are going to have fun on this island," it hints at his looming murder (128). Minor Change: The hiding place changes from a soiled place of peace, to a place of evil and death.
5. Ralph visits the hiding place to find safetly from Jack's trancy. There he finds the find and bare Lord of the Flies: "...he blundered into the open... there was the fathom-wide grin of the skull" (177). Major change: The pig's head has been reduced to a skull, reflecting the boys' destruction of the island. Just as the Lord of the Flies corrupted the hiding spot, foreshadowing Simon's death, the presence of the skull now suggests Ralph will be caught and killed, adding to the suspense of the ending.
