1. Ralph and Piggy find the conch. Piggy remembers that conch shells make a sound when you blow in them. Ralph uses it to summon the other boys: "'We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They'll come when they hear us,'" Piggy (10). Establishes the conch as a unifying and an authoritative symbol. Major change: the conch is first discovered and the group begins to form. 2. At the meeting, boys decide you must have the conch to speak, and vote for Ralph because he found the conch: "But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch. The being that had blown that, had sat waiting for them on the platform with the delicate thing balanced on his knees, was set apart" (15). Creates a sense of power and order within the conch. Minor change: order is established and Ralph is given power. 3. Over time, its appearance begins to fade: “Exposure to air had bleached the yellow and pink to near-white, and transparency” (67). At the same time the tribe begins to fall apart and the boys start disobeying the rules. As the shell decays, the boys' government decays as well. Major change: the system of rules and order begin to decay and the tribe starts to fall apart. 4. Jack attempts to blow the conch shell, but the wrong sound comes out, showing how although he is capable of leading, Jack will lead the boys down the wrong path. When Jack's tribe raids Ralph's camp, Piggy "... was sure he would go for the conch,"(126) and when shown to the littuns they all come together again. Demonstrates that Jack's tribe no longer cares for order or structure. Minor Change: Jack's character is revealed further, and the power and order of the conch is slightly restored. 5. The shell is broken by the same rock that kills Piggy: "...the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist" (163). The shattering of the shell represents the destruction of the order on the island as the boys fall into chaos. Major change: all order and civility is completely lost, evil and chaos rule over order and peace.
