Lord of the Flies - Setting

  1. The island is scarred by the landing of the boy’s plane. “In the middle of the scar he stood and grinned at the reversed fat boy.” (2) This changed the island from a perfect paradise to a place flawed by the presence of humans and their destructive nature. This is a major change for the island because it makes up the entirety of the moral value of the story.
  2. The fire on the island. “You got your small fire alright.” (35) This shows the island is losing its perfection further, being more and more tarnished by the mistakes of humanity. This is more of a minor change story wise, but part of an ongoing major change allegorically due to the fact I stated above.
  3. Huts being built on the island. “Huts on the Beach.” (39) The huts on the beach show that the boys believe they need protection from the island, even though the island’s gradual release into “danger” is due to their arrival in the first place. This is again a minor change in the story but part of the allegorical value of the book.
  4. A beast appears on the island. “I saw something big and horrid moving through the trees.” (73) This change shows that the island has the potential to contain something that is more powerful than the boys. This represents the power that savagery has over civility in human nature. This is a big change in the novel since the boys spend quite a while hunting for the beast.
  5. Part of the island kills Piggy. “The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee.” (163) this shows that ultimately, the taint that the boys placed on the island from the very beginning ends up ultimately killing one of them. This is an obvious major change in the novel and continues to represent the ongoing theme I stated above before.

DM: 2- Your had the five moments needed, but they could have been more detailed. Could you guys have showed us how the changes to the setting affected the boys as well?
Quotes: 2- The quotes clearly demonstrated your information, but there was one quote that was a little weak for support. ("Huts on the Beach(39).")
Presentation: 2- all grammar and spelling is correct, but the quotations are documented incorrectly.
